A–D, A longitudinal orientation of the cellulose fibrils in relation to the root axis was also seen in the Juncaceae (A and B, Juncus effusus L.) and the Cyperaceae (C and D, Cyperus congestus Vahl.). E–H, In all other species of the Poales not belonging to the families Poaceae, Cyperaceae or Juncaceae, the orientation of cellulose fibrils in the outer epidermal wall of the root elongation zone was transverse with respect to the growth axis of the root. This is indicated by greater fluorescence in F (Sparganium erectum L.: Sparganiaceae) and H (Typha angustifolia L.: Typhaceae). Scale bars = 100 µm.
