(a) Rugose, RΔrbmA, RΔbap1, and RΔrbmC pellicles growing in a 24-well dish and then transferred to a 24-well dish containing deionized water. Note that upon transferring, the rugose, RΔrbmA, and RΔrbmC pellicles remain at the air-liquid interface, but the RΔbap1 pellicle curls upon itself and sinks to the bottom of the well. (b) Contact angle measurements on dry rugose and RΔbap1 pellicles. Multiple measurements gave a contact angle of 100° ± 10° for the rugose pellicle and 50° ± 10° for the RΔbap1 pellicle, indicating that the RΔbap1 pellicle is more hydrophilic.
