Model of the regulation of sphingolipid metabolism by autophagy. De novo sphingolipid biosynthesis takes place in the ER, initiated by SPT, and results in the production of ceramide, a metabolite that is normally transferred out of the ER. In the absence of efficient autophagy, both ceramide and SPT become elevated within the ER. In this model ceramide levels are restrained by autophagy of ER membranes enriched in ceramide and SPT.
