Courtship behavior in grasshoppers and stimuli used. (A) During natural courtship behavior, male grasshoppers produce a calling song. Based on temporal features of this song, the female decides whether to respond with her own song to initiate further courtship. In playback experiments, songs were broadcast using a speaker and the female response was recorded by a microphone.
