Figure 1. — Experimental protocol. Schematic diagram indicates changes in inspired gas concentrations during experiments and experimental protocol. Animals were placed in the plethysmograph for 25–45 min at their chronic inspired O₂ level prior to the start of an experiment to allow time to acclimate to the environment. Solid line indicates control (CON) rats (21% O₂); dashed line indicates chronic sustained hypoxia (CSH) rats (10% O₂). Arterial blood gas (ABG) samples were collected at the indicated time points. Animals received injections of artificial cerebral spinal fluid (ACSF: sham) and cocktail (DBQX + MK801) at the times indicated.
