FIG 2 — Sheep vaccinated with _B1BTV-8^VP2/VP5 and _B1BTV-8^VP2 are protected against wild-type BTV-8 challenge. Vaccine trials were carried out using four groups of Lacaune crossbred sheep. Group 1 animals were not vaccinated, while groups 2 and 3 were vaccinated with either _B1BTV-8^VP2/VP5 and _B1BTV-8^VP2, respectively. An additional group of sheep was also vaccinated with _B1BTV-8^VP2 (group 4) but with a lower vaccine dose than that used in current vaccine formulations. At 21 days postvaccination, each group was challenged with a virulent BTV-8 strain, and each animal was assessed for the onset of fever, clinical signs, and viremia. A total of 14 of 15 vaccinated animals in groups 2 to 4 were protected against BTV-8 challenge. One animal in group 3 developed fever and displayed viremia.
