FIG 5

Steady-state MuHV-4-specific antibodies and AFCs in C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice. (a) BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice infected in either the URT (U) or LRT plus URT (L) were assayed 36 to 44 days later for virus-specific antibody in sera and nasal washes. The titers are relative to a standard immune serum. Each bar shows the mean ± SEM of 6 mice. The baseline corresponds to the lower limit of assay sensitivity. BALB/c mice showed significantly higher serum IgM, IgG1, and IgG2a responses than C57BL/6 mice for both URT and LRT-plus-URT infections and significantly lower IgG2b responses for LRT-plus-URT infection (P < 0.05). (b) Lymphoid organs of the same mice were analyzed for virus-specific AFCs by ELISpot. Each bar shows the mean ± SEM of 6 mice. The dashed line shows the lower limit of assay sensitivity.
