(D) Cells microdissected from the gland all contain the same heteroplasmic m.825 G>T mutation in the MT-RNR1 gene. MUC2 cells (i) wild-type cells; (ii) MUC2 cells, (iii) MUC5AC cells, (iv) basal mucous-secreting cells (note: a lower level of heteroplasmy was detected), (iv) all share this mutation, but cells from the neighbouring wild-type gland do not. Online supplementary figure S4 shows high power views of the cells dissected.
