Although genes mediating CD8+ T cell activation (CD28, TOB1) were expressed at similar levels in the blood of vaccinated animals and unvaccinated controls, expression of biomarkers of differentiation of memory (CCR7, CD44) and terminal effector CD8+ T cell subsets was discordant between the two groups. SIVΔnef vaccinated animals up regulated expression of memory-specific biomarkers and down modulated factors associated with terminal effector functions, while unvaccinated animals displayed the opposite profile.
