A putative proton exchange pathway connecting the heme a3 propionate groups to the P-side of the membrane (PDB: 3ABL). A series of crystallographically identified water molecules link the cluster of waters near the heme a3 propionate groups via the magnesium ion to the P-side of the membrane. The water molecules (red spheres) are separated by ~2.7-3.3 Å.
