The coacervate does not increase the macrophage density at the lesion epicenter (A, D). Glial scarring, as measured by the intensity of GFAP staining, was also not different in groups receiving the coacervate compared to PBS controls. The intensity of the entire glial scar was quantified (B) as well as at the lesion epicenter, where presumably scarring would be the most prominent (C). In both cases, animals receiving the Shh coacervate had a significant (p<0.05) reduction in GFAP intensity compared to PBS and empty coacervate groups, indicating a possible effect of Shh delivery on scar formation.
