For the trigger “phosphorylation” in the third sentence, the author neglected to mention the theme because it can be inferred from the context: (1) the previous sentence also mentions this “BMP-6 induced phosphorylation”, but its theme has a general term “Smad”, and (2) the actual proteins “Smad1/5/8” are clearly specified in the first sentence.
