Painted bivalents or their fragments in the photomicrographs are numbered arbitrarily using Roman numerals, which correspond to those on the idiograms. Bivalents that cannot be traced end- to-end are marked by dotted open-ended lines. White arrows indicate yellow fluorescence caused by the hybridisation of non-specific repeats common to the two chromosome arms. Chromosomes in Figures 17 are counterstained with DAPI. Relative lengths of chromosomes in the idiograms are only approximate. Bar: 10 µm.
