A: 2 tones were delivered to 1 ear, and the distortion products were measured at 3 different sound pressure levels; 2 distortion products were detected, 2f1 − f2 (dp1) and 3f1 − 2f2 (dp2), from a mutant mouse. B: the same animal was then lethally overdosed with anesthetic without moving the tone probes or microphone. Ten minutes after breathing movements ceased the same 2 tones were delivered, but these resulted in no distortion products.
