Alcohol metabolism. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) is the main cytosolic enzyme that converts alcohol to acetaldehyde. The inducible microsomal enzyme also forms acetaldehyde. The toxic metabolite acetaldehyde is then further oxidized to acetate by the mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH).
