Bicarbonate-containing solutions were bubbled with 5% CO2 and 95% O2. All solutions were pH 7.4. Glucose was included in the bath solutions to adjust the osmolality to approximately 300 mmol/Kg. The solution osmolality was determined with an osmometer (Model 5520, Vapro® vapor pressure osmometer, Wescor Inc., Logan, UT, USA).
