Aortic stenosis model schematic. The square indicates the policy decision of TAVR or medical management. There are 8 mutually exclusive health states defined by the patient’s symptom status and complication history. Circles represent chance events that can occur within a cycle. Each cycle, patients may develop one or more, potentially fatal, complications and may be re-hospitalized. The health state to which patients transition depends on their current health state and their procedural, hospitalization, and complication history (individuals were classified by the most severe complication in their history).

TAVR = transcatheter aortic valve replacement, MED = medical management, CVA = stroke, VC = vascular complication, III/IV = NYHA class III/IV level symptoms, I/II = NYHA class I/II level symptoms.
