Fig. 2 — The experimental design of the tree diversity experiment in Kreinitz: (a) Different tree species mixtures (differing colours) were arranged randomly within 49 plots, and identical mixtures were repeated in the two blocks (A and B). (b) The general plot design included 30 tree individuals arranged along five rows. Within plots, individuals of each tree species were randomly distributed. The number of individuals per tree species depended on the tree species mixture but was equal among tree species in each plot. The dotted line shows the core area within the plot.
