The three-dimensional collagen organization of the rabbit cornea (A) dramatically differs from the human cornea [8] (B). Note that the bulk of the rabbit cornea exhibits parallel arrangement of collagen fibers with collagen intertwining present only in the anterior aspect. In contrast, extensive collagen fiber intertwining is present within the anterior 80% of the human cornea. In the rabbit cornea, collagen fibers are also less densely packed in comparison to the human cornea.
