Abbreviations: FACS, fluorescence-activated cell sorter; lipos.ctl, control liposomes lipos.Clodronate, liposomal clodronate; PBS, phosphate-buffered saline.

Each mouse was injected i.m. with 5 × 109 vg of rAAV2/1_CMV_SGCA-HY vector, and then received either PBS or lipos.clodronate or lipos.ctl as described in the Materials and methods section. Fourteen days after administration of the vector and 2 days after the last injection of liposomes, live spleen cells were analyzed by FACS and results show the mean percentages (plus/minus s.d.) of CD11b+ F4/80+ macrophages or of CD11b+ Gr1+ granulocytes of three separate experiments. Bold numbers emphasize the depletion of macrophages by clodronate-containing liposomes both in Scga-/- and in C57BL/6 mice.
