There is a vicious cycle between down-regulation of antioxidant enzymes and oxidative/nitrosative stress caused by ROS/RNS. Oxdative/nitrosative stress triggers DNA methylation of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes which leads to silencing of these genes, hampering the cellular defence against oxidative/nitrosative insult.
