A question mark indicates that the presence or absence of U-to-C editing was inferred based on the presence or absence of internal stop codons in essential plastid genes. Inferred gain (black bar) and losses (white bars) of U-to-C editing were mapped using parsimony onto a phylogeny depicting the currently accepted relationships among land plants [35–37].
