B, fenretinide-treated cells: three types of cell morphology were seen; small cells with chromatin condensation, shrinkage of the cytoplasm, and the formation of apoptotic bodies, typical of apoptosis (black arrowhead); large flattened cells without nuclear condensation suggestive of senescence (solid white arrow); and small cells similar to control cells that appeared unchanged after drug exposure (open white arrow).
