Histochemical staining and biomechanical analysis have shown that as expected the total amount of MMPs 2 and 9 increase as a function of age, presumably in an attempt to maintain the thickness of Bruch's membrane during the ageing process (a and b), respectively. However, when the active forms of these MMPs were determined, they were clearly shown to decrease as a function of age as a result of binding or sequestration (c).
