Kidney uptake transporter mRNA expression in rodent NASH. mRNA expression of rat uptake (A) and mouse uptake (B) transporters in the kidneys of rodent NASH models via branched DNA gene analysis. The transporters investigated, with the exception of Oatp1a1, are localized on the basolateral membrane of renal proximal tubules and participate in the uptake of substrates from the peritubular capillaries into the proximal tubule cell for secretion into to lumen for urinary secretion. In contrast, Oatp1a1 is expressed on the apical membrane of the proximal tubule cell and is responsible for the uptake of substrates into the proximal tubule cell from the lumen filtrate in a process known as reabsorption.
