FIG 2

The growth rate in CDM alters colony type. Colonies observed from S. aureus WCH-SK2 cells grown in batch culture were large pigmented colonies, and with a growth rate of μrel = 0.75, the pigmentation was reduced. A growth rate of μrel = 0.15 produced small, nonpigmented colonies ranging in size from 3 mm to <1 mm. The growth in a chemostat over time naturally selects for SCV cells in the population.
