Fig. 1 — The structure of Zn-tetrathiolate cluster. The Zn₄ cluster is composed of two cysteine residues (C94 and C99, human nomenclature) from each subunit of eNOS (cyan and magenta). Oxidation of cysteine residues within the Zn₄ cluster requires less energy due to formation of three electron S–S bond in the tetrahedral coordination.
