The structure of Zn-tetrathiolate cluster. The Zn4 cluster is composed of two cysteine residues (C94 and C99, human nomenclature) from each subunit of eNOS (cyan and magenta). Oxidation of cysteine residues within the Zn4 cluster requires less energy due to formation of three electron S–S bond in the tetrahedral coordination.
