The data shown in Fig. 3 were replotted in terms of targeting density for the vaccine regions, as percentages of HIV-1-specific responses in the memory T lymphocyte compartment per 1,000 amino acids of the vaccine target protein. For example, a vaccination with a protein region of 550 amino acids that yielded a response of 0.12% of memory CD4+ T lymphocytes would have a targeting density of 1,000 × (0.12 ÷ 550) = 2.18.
