TERT and pathological tau mutually exclude each other. Sections from Braak Stage 0 and Braak Stages III-VI were labeled for TERT (red) and pathological tau (AT8; green). In the control cases, TERT immunoreactivity is present; however, AT8 staining is absent. In cases with higher Braak stages, AT8 staining is seen as NTs in dendrites and NFTs in the soma. Tangle-bearing neurons are not immunoreactive for TERT, and TERT-expressing neurons do not contain AT8. Scale bars, 50 μm.
