Parameters 2 & 5 were fixed on the basis of experiment 2 and were the same for all observers. Parameters 7 & 8 were fixed in advance for each observer from experimental results, as shown in Table A2. The remaining four free parameters (1, 3, 4, 6) were estimated by optimising the model fit (maximum likelihood) separately for each observer and each contrast ratio.
