Environmental and epigenetic factors. Many environmental factors such as diet, smoking, inflammation, stimuli and age may affect gene regulation, which leads to epigenetic modification in the genome. The mechanisms underlying epigenetic modification involve DNA methylation, histone modification, and gene regulation by non-coding RNAs. These mechanisms modulate gene expression and affect various gene functions.
