HSV-1 and HSV-2 strains vary significantly in the level of extracellular virion release. (A) Comparison of HSV-1 strain KOS1.1 and HSV-2 strain HG52. Vero cells were infected at an MOI of 5 PFU/cell, and infections were incubated for 24 h. Supernatant and cell fractions were harvested and titers were determined separately, and then the percent release was determined. Error bars denote standard errors of the means. (B) Comparison of multiple HSV-1 and HSV-2 strains. The experiment was performed as for panel A except infection was carried out at an MOI of 1 PFU/cell.
