TABLE 1. Indication to undertake the IPT procedure is based on the following findings1,10 .

1. History
  1. discomfort associated to thermal stimulation

  2. negative history of spontaneous pain

2. Clinical Examination
  1. active caries lesion in deep dentin

  2. absence of clinical diagnosis of pulp exposure, fistula, swelling of periodontal tissues, and abnormal tooth mobility

  3. absence of clinical symptoms of irreversible pulpitis, such as spontaneous pain or sensitivity to pressure

  4. normal appearance of adjacent gingiva

  5. normal tooth color

3. Radiographic Examination
  1. absence of radiolucencies at the periapical regions, or thickening of the periodontal spaces, that would indicate the presence of irreversible pulp pathologies or necrosis

  2. extension of the caries lesion should be such that complete caries removal would represent risk of pulp exposure
