Arterial oxygen saturation and systolic pulmonary artery pressure during sustained hypoxia. Upper panels show arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and lower panels show systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP) in the Ascorbate study and in the Iron study. The pulmonary vascular response to sustained hypoxia was not affected by increased ascorbate availability but was profoundly blunted by increased iron availability. This effect of iron became evident at the 2‐h time point (P < 0.05). *indicates a statistically significant overall effect of iron supplementation (P < 0.001). Data are mean ± SD.
