Two-week-old maize plants (var. Delprim) were induced by scratching the leaf surface and applying 10 μl of Spodotera littoralis regurgitant. Five major families of VOCs were induced: green leaf volatiles (GLVs; (Z)-3-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate)); monoterpenes (Linalool), homoterpenes (3E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT), (3E,7E)-4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene (TMTT)); sesquiterpenes ((E)-β-caryophyllene, (E)-α-bergamotene, (E)-β-farnesene) and aromatic compounds (Indole; n=6). Error bars correspond to standard errors (±s.e.).
