The main stages of sample preparation involved de-swelling the cornea and fixing the eye under pressure (a), followed by the mounting of a 1 mm wide sagittal corneal strip in an airtight clamping chamber (b). The photograph in (b) was taken on a blue background in order to visualize the corneal strip within the chamber.
