Coding gene chromosomal DNA was transcribed into heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA), thus producing messenger RNA (mRNA).

This nuclear mRNA forms complexes with ribonucleoproteins, some of which escort the mRNA into the cytosol. In the cytosol, mRNAs can join additional mRNAs and ribonucleoproteins to form transport granules, where they await signals that initiate translation. mRNA translation results in polymers containing several ribosomes.
