This figure shows a simplified phylogenetic tree of the order Diptera (based on [45,46]), subdivided into the monophyletic suborder Brachycera (blue background) and a paraphyletic assemblage of basally branching lineages, the Nematocera (pink background). Infraorder names are shown in parentheses. Non-cyclorraphan brachycerans include the infraorders Asiloidea, Stratiomyomorpha, Tabanomorpha (robber, soldier, and horse flies), and the likely sister group of the Cyclorrhapha, the Empidoidea (dance flies). Gain and loss of maternal factors within the Cyclorrhapha are indicated by coloured bars.
