MitoQ protects against cytoskeletal disorganization and maintains mitochondrial registry in ACF. The changes in mitochondrial morphology by TEM in the 8-wk ACF rat (Fig. 6) were attenuated in the ACF LV myocardium with MitoQ treatment (bottom). Mitochondrial electron density was restored, but mitochondria remained clustered in groups and lacked their characteristic one mitochondrion per sarcomere segment between Z-lines. However, sham rats treated with MitoQ (top) demonstrated clustering of those mitochondria between sarcomeric units, but as opposed to the ACF TEM, there was a preservation of the Z-line. Arrows indicate healthy Z-line electron density. Insets in top left and bottom left images are expanded in top right and bottom right images, respectively.
