Schematic overview of radiation-induced persistent effects on autophagy. Radiation caused oxidative stress leading to downregulation of autophagy and downregulated autophagy could in turn further promote oxidative stress. Additionally, activation of proliferative pathways such as PI3K/Akt and mTOR is expected to induce proliferation of cells damaged by oxidative stress leading transformation and functional alterations.
