Apoptotic stresses promote accumulation of BH3-only proteins leading to BAX/BAK oligomerisation, MOMP and release of intermembrane space proteins. Cytochrome c leads to apoptosome formation, which results in caspase activation and apoptosis. Smac and Omi neutralise the caspase inhibitor XIAP.
