Histone sequence features. (a) Histones contain a skewed amino acid composition. Amino acid frequencies are normalized to the average occurrence found in all proteins contained in the uniprot database (www.uniprot.org). Cationic residues, Arg, Lys; anionic, Asp, Glu; polar, Asn, Gln, Ser, Thr; aromatic, His, Phe, Trp, Tyr; aliphatic, Ile, Leu, Met, Val; Ala and Cys are plotted individually; the secondary structure breaking residues Gly and Pro are binned together.
