Reported numbers of casual sex partners in the 3-month periods before and after diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus infection. The symbol (+) represents an increase in the number of casual partners after diagnosis, the symbol (−) represents a decrease, and the absence of a symbol represents no change. Most respondents greatly reduced their numbers of casual partners, with many reporting none, although a few reported increased numbers. Data are from Fox et al [9].
