Schematic diagram to illustrate the variable relationship between awareness and discrimination. In normal subjects, the two are tightly coupled (above). In Riddoch Syndrome patients the two are partially dissociated. This leads to the condition in which Riddoch Syndrome patients are usually, but not always, able to discriminate what they are aware of (with fast moving stimuli) and, conversely are usually unable to discriminate the direction of motion of stimuli of which they are unaware.
