Examples of each of the nine classes of calcium transient observed when cells were exposed to 25 μM ATP for 35 min. (a–c) Transients that were slowly responding in nature; (df) transients that were rapidly responding and led to a stable plateau mode and (gi) transients that were rapidly responding and had a long-term behaviour characterized by one or more rapid elevations followed by a return to baseline. All intensities are in arbitrary units. Together these nine classes of transient describe the entire population of 114 identified cells in the field of view.
