The current findings indicate that auditory representations of the BOS and its syllables are organized in a salt-and-pepper fashion in HVC. An illustration of different models of the spatial representation of BOS and its component syllables within HVC, including (1) a salt-and-pepper organization, (2) a spatially clustered organization, or (3) a topographically ordered organization. Different colors of circles indicate either different timing of peak responses during BOS playback or different song syllables that evoked the strongest responses within individual PNs.
