(A–C) TUNEL-positive cells in the control group (Con) were rare. Apoptotic cells are visible in the paraquat (PQ) and ulinastatin (UTI) groups (arrows). Positive cells are visible as brown nuclei, and their reaction products aggregated around the nuclear membrane. The cells were more positive for TUNEL in the PQ group than in either the Con group or the UTI group. *P < 0.05, vs. the other two groups.
