Syndecan-1 is an integral membrane proteoglycan. Panel (A) shows the sdc1 core protein. Panel (B) shows the cytoplasmic fragment (CTF) in more detail highlighting the functions associated with its domains. TM=transmembrane domain, C1 and C2 are conserved regions 1 and 2, and V is the variable region that differs among the four sdc family members. Asterisks indicate potential metzincin protease cleavage sites. Cleavage at G82 and R126 has yet to be demonstrated in vivo during wound healing. The star indicates a potential γ-secretase cleavage site. HSPGs are purple and CSPGs are red. SSTN indicates synstatin and IRD is the invasion regulatory domain.
