Paramagnetic probes attached to a protein for site-specific incorporation of protein labeling. (A) Nitroxide spin label. (B) Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). (C) 2-amino-3-(8-hydroxyquinolin-3-yl)propanoic acid (HQA). Nitroxide spin labels and EDTA tags are mobile, containing multiple rotatable bonds and are incorporated by chemical reaction at a surface exposed cysteine residue, while HQA is approximately the size of tryptophan and is incorporated genetically at any position in the protein of interest.
