Strongly increased papillation (mutator phenotype) is observed for Δdgt strain and moderate papillation for the DNA-binding defective S34D/G37E strain, indicating a modest mutator phenotype for this strain. The assay scores for the production of lacZ A·T → G·C transition mutations (12). The strains in this experiment were mismatch-repair proficient.
